FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Sierra Club is proud to announce endorsements in two City Council races for the March 3, 2020 election.

  • Council District 2 – Robert Fox
  • Council District 8 – Juan Ovalle

The Sierra Club looks for candidates that are strong and consistent advocates for the environment.  The Sierra Club works for air and water that is safe for us, better public transportation, renewable energy, water and energy conservation and green collar jobs.

“We are a non-partisan group of volunteers” explains Gabrielle Weeks.  “Along with political activities we also have hikes or informative meetings, just search for ‘Long Beach Are Sierra Club’ online to check us out.” The Long Beach Sierra Club website can be visited at http://angeles2.sierraclub.org/longbch/

Robert Fox has been actively engaged with our communities for many years, leading beach clean ups, tree plantings and neighborhood association events.   He knows how city government works, and has good ideas about how to improve our government to make it more responsive and transparent, including addressing major challenges like climate change.

Juan Ovalle spearheaded research to determine how widespread the tree scale in Long Beach has become that weakens and kills our street trees.  He asked us for help as he discussed treatment with arborists and the State University Master Gardeners.  Our members in his district are impressed with Juan’s years of volunteering with local projects.  Juan’s accomplishments began 29 years ago when his group at the Long Beach Water Department begun water conservation efforts.

Members of the Long Beach Area Group of Sierra Club are engaged citizens concerned with the many challenges that face our city and that affect our quality of life including, and environmental issues.  An endorsement by the Sierra Club in state and local campaigns brings a candidate the strength of an organization with 58,000 members in Southern California alone.

The Sierra Club does not make endorsements lightly. The process begins at the local level with questionnaires sent to all candidates who qualified for the ballot.  After reviewing the responses,  candidates met with the local political committee. The committee makes recommendations, submitted to the L.A. County Political Committee for review. This process can take as long as 30 days. While the checks and balances may be time consuming, the process ensures that the candidates supported by the Sierra Club are committed to the cause of conservation and environmental improvement.

The Sierra Club Long Beach Group is part of the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club. The group has more than 2,500 members and serves Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood, Long Beach, Los Alamitos, Signal Hill and Seal Beach.

Our member meeting is the first Wednesday monthly, we have many local hikes every week.
